The Five Fishermen

This True Ghost Story happened very unexpectedly during a visit to the notoriously haunted Five Fishermen restaurant in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We went there for supper…but experienced so much more.

Thank you to the Five Fishermen Restaurant for turning our evening into an unforgettable experience - with a shout out to our waitress Kirsten. We never expected the tour or to capture a shadow anomaly on film.

Thank you to Willowbee Productions for creating the video and putting the narrative together.

We definitely plan to return.

On Wednesday, December 25, 2024, I made a reservation for myself, my husband, our daughter, and our son-in-law, to eat at a famously haunted restaurant in Halifax, Nova Scotia. While making the reservation, I mentioned that we were a group of paranormal investigators and I requested their most haunted table.

Fast forward two days - Friday, December 27, 2024.

At 6:30pm we arrived at the Five Fishermen and were escorted to our table which was located on the second floor of the building, overlooking the Grand Parade Square. Our view seemed fitting as many public hangings and executions took place on the grounds across the street between the 1700’s-1930’s.

Our waitress, Kirsten, told us that the paranormal activity in the building seemed to ramp up upon our arrival, explaining that glasses were falling, lights were flickering, etc.. Kirsten said that she had worked at the restaurant for five years and had experienced a number of supernatural occurrences. Part way through our meal, she took the time to share some of her own paranormal stories including being locked into a room unexpectedly and seeing the full body apparition of a man wearing a long pea coat, who she - and many others - believe is the spirit of John Snow - the original owner of the morgue which is now a part of the Five Fishermen restaurant. It was John Snow who helped to prepare the bodies of the victims of the Titanic (1912) and the Halifax explosion (1917) for burial.

At the end of our meal (which was fantastic btw), Kirsten took us on a small tour to show us some of the more haunted areas of the building. One of the rooms she led us to was, in fact, the old morgue…which is now used for private dining events such as weddings and birthday parties. She pointed to the back corner of the room and told us that that was where she had seen the full body apparition of the man wearing the pea coat. We asked permission to take some photos and video footage of our own. She said that was fine.

When I turned on my camera and started to record, it immediately started malfunctioning. I had never seen anything like it. My camera had never done that before and hasn’t done it since. All five of us - including Kirsten - witnessed the malfunction. Kirsten said that she wasn’t surprised at all.

I didn’t notice it while my camera was malfunctioning, but when I was reviewing the footage the next day, I was able to make out a large shadow anomaly crossing the room along the south wall. It appeared to come out of the corner that Kirsten had referred to as John’s corner - where the apparition of the man in the pea coat was spotted - and it moved across the back wall from west to east. I cannot say exactly what it was that I captured on film that night. I can only tell you that it was an unplanned investigation and that the camera I was using was my cell phone. Watch the video - that includes the footage of the old morgue with the shadow mall - and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Now that I’m back in Saskatchewan, I feel like I’m being called back to the Five Fishermen. Should I return to spend an evening in the old morgue? Would you?
