Fall Messenger: Red Squirrel

A red squirrel gathers acorns from the forest floor in preparation for winter.

The Red Squirrel: An Unexpected Harvest

You chose The Animal Path — where instinct sometimes creates outcomes no one could have planned.

In autumn, the red squirrel is rarely still for long.

It moves through the trees.

Across fallen logs.

Down to the forest floor and back again.

Searching.

Gathering.

Carrying away what it finds.

A seed.

A nut.

Something worth saving for later.

Some will be eaten soon.

Others will be tucked away in places the squirrel may return to when food becomes harder to find.

But not every hidden store will be recovered.

Some will remain exactly where they were placed.

Forgotten beneath leaves and soil.

And occasionally, what was meant to become a meal becomes something else entirely.

A seed takes root.

A new plant emerges.

Something grows where no one intended to plant it.

Not everything has to unfold according to plan to become something worthwhile.

We spend a great deal of time imagining how things are supposed to happen.

We make arrangements.

Set expectations.

Choose a direction.

Picture the result.

Sometimes it happens exactly that way.

Sometimes it doesn't.

A plan changes.

Something gets delayed.

An opportunity leads somewhere unexpected.

What you thought you were working toward becomes the beginning of something you never considered.

It is easy to judge those moments by comparing them with the original plan.

But the original plan is only one possible outcome.

Autumn is full of things being carried, scattered and rearranged.

Seeds travel.

Leaves move with the wind.

Animals gather what they need.

And across the landscape, countless small actions create consequences no one intended.

Some of them become next year's growth.

Perhaps something in your own life has wandered away from the way you pictured it.

That does not automatically mean it has wandered somewhere wrong.

You may simply not know what will grow there yet.

Affirmation

I remain open to worthwhile possibilities I did not plan for.

Closing Reflection

The squirrel buries the seed for one reason.

The forest may eventually use it for another.

Neither outcome makes the original effort meaningless.

One becomes nourishment.

Another may become a tree.

There are times when life works this way too.

Something you began with one intention may eventually serve another.

A change of direction may reveal an opportunity that the original route could never have reached.

And something that did not happen as expected may still leave something valuable behind.

You do not have to pretend every unexpected turn is welcome.

Some are disappointing.

Some require adjustment.

But different does not always mean diminished.

The squirrel cannot know what will become of everything it carries into the forest.

It simply does what the season asks of it.

And occasionally, somewhere beneath the fallen leaves, an entirely different future begins.
